Doctor Faustroll (French: Docteur Faustroll) is a fictional character created by Alfred Jarry. Doctor Faustroll was born in Circassia in 1898 at the age of 63 and dead at the same age and the same year. The character debuts in the 1911 novel Exploits and Opinions of Dr. Faustroll, pataphysician. He is the curator of the Collège de ’Pataphysique.
Wise and well-read, of which his library is a witness, Faustroll, suddenly expulsed from his home by a huissier, begins in 1898, accompanied by his monkey Bosse-de-Nage, un trip « de Paris à Paris par mer », which leads him to his death, near the Grande Nef Mour-de-Zencle. Projected into « eternity », he telepathically communicates numerous rules concerning the weather, the sun, space with Lord Kelvin. Eventually, he calculates the surface de Dieu, and concludes that « La Pataphysique equals science... ».
Ubu Roi (King Ubu) is a play developed by Alfred Jarry. It was premiered on December 10 1896, and is widely acknowledged as a theatrical precursor to the Absurdist, Dada and Surrealist art movements. It is the first of three plays written throughout Jarry's life that satirize European philosophies, and their sometimes ludicrous practices. The two following plays were Ubu Cocu (Ubu Cuckolded) and Ubu Enchaîné (Ubu Enchained), neither of which were performed in Jarry's lifetime.
